Attendance All Student absences must be explained in writing. written explanations are retained in a designated folder and student attendance and absences are recorded daily. Attendance is recorded on Alladdin each morning. Note of absences must be sent into class teacher. Parents are expected to sign the Homework Journal if your child is absent and to give an explanation. If your child is sick, please leave a message at the Main Office line. Legislation requires that the relevant authorities will be informed of pupils who have been absent for twenty school days or more (this includes illness, holidays outside school holidays etc.)
Access to building Students may enter the main building at both entrances. Pupils hang up their coats and go immediately to their classroom. Junior classes and rang I and rang II hang their coats in their own class room
Accidents and sick children All accidents are recorded by teacher on duty at time in Accident Book kept in staff room. Minor cuts and bruises are treated by washing with water. Anything other than minor injuries are dealt with by immediately informing the Principal and contacting Patent/Guardian who take child home or to the doctor. If Parent/Guardian cannot be contacted Principal and colleague will take injured child immediately for medical help
Breaks At break time the children have snack/lunch and go out to play. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and laptop. Each teacher has a weekly timetable clearly displayed in classroom
Class Trips The Board of Management are informed of class trips prior to the date of the trip. No child is ever brought on a school outing without written permission from parents. Notes go out if there are football matches. Children are transported to and from all school activities by bus. Class teacher is responsible for ensuring that supervision is adequate.
Computers Children have access to the use of Tablets. ICT is used as a tool for learning
Competitions It is school policy to participate in and support local competitions. It is also recommended that children participate in national/international competitions at teacher’s discretion.
Code of Behaviour See school’ ‘Code of Behaviour’ policy. At the beginning of the school year each class revises school/ classroom rules. Emphasis is placed on positive reinforcement
Dismissal Infants: Infants must be collected at 2.00pm. Collector must wait quietly outside classroom for child. Senior classes are dismissed at 3pm. Children are not allowed to use PE equipment or play on school grounds after 3pm. Children who have not been collected on time should remain with class teacher who immediately contacts parents/guardians
Environmentally Friendly Policies The motto is ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’. All teachers work to promote good practice in relation to reducing waste. All classrooms are supplied with a compost bin, a recycling bin, and a general rubbish bin. Children should be constantly reminded to separate waste. Paper should be reused as much as possible. Emphasis on energy saving by turning off lights, closing doors to keep heat indoors etc. Teams of litter pickers regularly monitor school grounds for litter
Fire drill A Fire Drill is held regularly during the school year. List of names of pupils in class are used during fire drill. List displayed in each classroom
Healthy Eating. Children are actively encouraged to bring healthy lunches to school. All children can avail of breakfast and a hot lunch meal. This initiative is support by the 'Department of Social Protection’. The school has a ‘Healthy Eating’ policy. Chewing gum is not allowed. Children are encouraged to use recyclable containers.
Internal Information Libary Details of circulars, courses, competitions may be available in the school and on the school website. Each class has its own library
Medication See Policy on ‘Administrations of Medicines’. Parents are asked to inform the school in writing if their child suffers from any allergies, long term or short term illness and if their child is on medication. Medicines should never be kept in classroom unless necessary. Medications will only be administered with written permission from parents/guardians. Inhalers: All students must inform class teacher if they are carrying inhalers to school and must have a signed request from parents to use them during the school day.
Parental Concerns It is natural that issues of concern will arise from time to time. It is in the best interest of the child that matters are amicable resolved as quickly as possible and that protocols are followed in relation to relevant school policies It is school policy to facilitate good home/school relations by promoting good communication between parents and school and facilitating concerned parents by arranging appointments when requested to do so.
Parent/teacher Meetings Formal Parent/teacher meetings are held in second term. Informal Parent /Teacher meetings may be arranged by parents ringing the school to arrange an appointment
Permission to leave early Students who need to leave school for any reason must present a signed request to do so from Parent/Guardian. Children must be collected from classroom and sign out book must be signed. Each class has their own sign out book. No child may leave the school unaccompanied during the school day.
Phone Numbers Please ensure that school secretary has an up-to-date address and phone number. It is the parent’s responsibility to inform the school in writing of any changes in name, address or telephone mobile phone number.. We also need two further contact numbers for emergencies.
Playground Protocol Teachers don’t leave playground while on duty. Children are not allowed back into school building nor allowed to leave the playground without teacher’s on duty permission. If a child falls or feels ill the teacher on duty is alerted and SNA takes the child in to care for them. Accidents occur despite supervision. Minor accidents are treated at school. In the event of a more serious accident or a child becoming very ill, every possible effort will be made to contact the pupil’s parents or the persons delegated to take responsibility for that child. Duty teachers make the decision about staying indoors or going out on wet days
Pupil Data Under Data Protection legislation all pupil data is kept in a secure place. Queries regarding access to reports should be referred to the Principal. Professional confidentiality is respected and practiced. Written parental permission should be secured before transferring any information regarding students to an outside body.
Security During school day access to building is only through main door. Doors are kept closed during school day while pupils are in class. Each teacher is responsible for securing classroom at end of school day, windows are shut, electrical appliances are unplugged.
Standarised Tests Standardised Tests are carried out during the school year in line with Department of Education and Science guidelines.
School Uniform Children are encouraged to wear their school uniform. School tracksuit is worn for P.E and for swimming. We ask you to adhere strictly to the uniform
